Can a Card Game Play Like a Tabletop RPG?
Moonfall does it with an AI Game Master. You choose what your card does, and the AI decides what happens. Its launch trailer, Tonight, shows how.
Yes. In a tabletop RPG, players say what their characters try, and a Game Master decides what happens and tells the story. Moonfall puts that idea on a card table. You play your cards and choose what your creatures do, and an AI Game Master reads the whole table, rules on each move and narrates it. Moonfall's launch trailer, Tonight, shows the loop in under a minute.
What the trailer shows
In 38 seconds, Tonight fuses two cards into a new one and picks its painting from four. It lists the new card for sale, then plays a match in which the AI storyteller writes what happens. It turns that match into manga, dreams up a summoner and tears open a card pack. Everything on screen is the real game, recorded. Pairs fused in a film may give you different cards: each pair's result is decided the first time anyone fuses it.
You choose what your card does
A Moonfall card has a name, a mana cost and a line of text, and no attack or health numbers. When you command one of your creatures, the Game Master offers three things it could do in that moment, and you pick one. Spells do what their text says.
The AI Game Master decides what happens
The Game Master reads the whole table: both summoners, every creature and the cards played so far. Then it rules on your move, what it does, whom it hurts and what it costs, and narrates the result in the story beside the board. Because the table around a card is never quite the same, the same card can land differently from one match to the next. How Moonfall's AI Game Master works goes into the details.
Like a tabletop RPG, at a card table
- You declare, the Game Master rules. You choose the move; you never compute the result.
- Words matter. A card's text is what the Game Master reads, so the way a card is written shapes what it can do.
- The story is kept. The match is written down as you play. With the Manga Pass, the game also draws it as manga panels, and a finished match can be opened as a storybook.
- The table is yours to fill. Play a friend with a room code or an invite link, or play the AI.
Where the comparison ends
Moonfall is still a card game. There is a deck, mana that grows each turn, and a summoner to bring down from 25 health. There are no character sheets and no dice. And the Game Master is an AI, so its rulings and stories can still be imperfect.
